First Steps: Before School Starts

Here is a list of to do items to help you get started. Be sure to allow yourself lots of time to organize and prepare. The band room is often a very busy learning environment.
 

  • Go to the school and introduce yourself to the office staff and get your key.

  • Check all instruments are in working order

  • Have you got the required supplies i.e. reeds, oils

  • Decide procedures for safely entering and exiting the room

  • Decide instrument sign out procedure

  • Check all tech stuff is working

  • What are the classroom expectations?

  • Acquaint yourself with the instrument and rep inventory

  • Get everything ready for the first day i.e.handouts

Best practices for good classroom management begin before you start your instruction. Consider the following before you start your first day lessons.

  • Greet your class at the door

  • Once everyone is seated Introduce yourself

  • Make sure the students have arrived in the correct class (Music)

  • Take attendance (for difficult names ask if you are pronouncing the name correctly; also ask for the name each by which each student would like to be addressed)

  • Distribute Student information sheets.

  • Take home to review, check for IPRC learning/physical modification/accommodation needs

  • Extra Curricular offerings. (List for your school)
