LAURIER/OBA ELEMENTARY HONOUR BAND
loehb 2020 cancelled
Dear LOEHB Parents/Guardians and Teachers,
In light of the most recent updates from all levels of government and public health organizations requiring social distancing, the board of directors for the Ontario Band Association (OBA), in conjunction with Laurier Department of Music have decided to cancel this year's Laurier / OBA Elementary Honour Band. This means that the Laurier / OBA Elementary Honour Band will be cancelled for this year only. We are disappointed that developments have led to this, however, the health and welfare of everyone must be the first consideration.
Refunds will be processed over the coming weeks. In the meantime, tell the young musicians to keep practising their instruments - play along with the recordings and to continue to make music. Music is something that can bring calm and comfort in times of crisis. Encourage them to do skype and facetime concerts for their friends and family. Please ensure the music continues to flow from your homes. "Where words fail, music speaks." - Hans Christian Andersen
Any student in grade 7 will automatically have a spot in the Honour Band in 2021. For those families who’s registrant is in grade 8, I would like to thank you. Some have been part of the Laurier / OBA Elementary Honour Band for several years. It is regrettable that their final year of the Laurier / OBA Elementary Honour Band has been cancelled, however, it is clear that this is the best decision for the well being of everyone. All those registrants who are in grade 8 currently are welcomed (and encouraged) to reach out next year around this time - we would be happy to have you volunteer for the honour band. It would be an awesome chance to stay connected to the Laurier / OBA Elementary Honour Band and get volunteer hours.
The dates for next years event will be May 1-2, 2021.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me.
Thank you all for your understanding. Please take care of each other, wash your hands, and stay home if you can.
Honour Bands are a great chance for students to meet other like-minded individuals and work towards a common goal. The Laurier/OBA Honour Band is an educational concert band that will develop not only the participants' musical capabilities, but also their self confidence, team work and spirit, which they will bring home and to school to positively affect everyone who is around them.
We are grateful to Wilfrid Laurier University for hosting the annual LOEHB. Last year, we had 122 student participate, each receiving a bursary to Interprovincial Music Camp.
Dr. Jessica Kun will conduct the 2020 LOEHB. Our goal is to engage 150 students and have two performing ensembles.
Students from Grade 7 & 8 can be recommended by their teachers to be in the ensemble. The participation fee for the weekend will be $55.
