York/OBA Beginning Band Symposium.

What is it?

The Beginning Band Symposium provides an opportunity for professional development with an experienced clinician. Topics may include, but are not limited to, rehearsal techniques, repertoire ideas, introductory band class lessons, engagement and program development. BBS also allows teachers to connect with colleagues from across the province.

2021 FEES

Please note that you have to be a member of the OBA to attend the York/OBA Beginning Band Symposium.

The event fees are as follows:

New/Renewing Membership (Regular) & Symposium Fee ..............................  $65

New/Renewing Membership (Student/Retiree) & Symposium Fee .... $45

Symposium Fee Only (Regular/Student/Retiree) ................. $10

By selecting this option, you agree that you are a member of the Ontario Band Association. Should you not be a member, you will be asked to purchase a membership upon confirmation.

2021 Session
BreakDown

Please note that all sessions for the 2021 York/OBA Beginning Band Symposium will be fully virtual.

Session 1 - 10am to 11am

This workshop will explore innovative and fun ways for teachers to engage students in the creative process, thereby enriching student experience in all aspects of their musical journey.

Session 2 - 11:15am to 12:15pm

Session 2 continues with more cool Ideas and discussion around creative ways to engage your students. Additionally, Vince will present a mini-reading session of some exciting new works for band from Alfred Publishing.

Break - 12:15pm to 12:45pm

Session 3 - 12:45pm to 1:45pm

As educators, we constantly have the best interests of our students in mind. The best way to do this is to take care of ourselves first. This session will focus on ways to reset and reenergize regardless of the time of year.

Symposium concludes at 2pm.

The last 15 minutes of each session will be reserved for a Q&A portion. 

2021 CLINICIAN: VINCE GASSI

An Alfred Publishing author since 2006, Vince Gassi is a much sought-after composer, conductor, and clinician. With over 100 published titles to his credit, Vince's creative and energetic style has made him a favourite with young musicians. His works, both challenging and musically rewarding, appear on many international concert and contest lists.
Vince received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada and later studied composing and arranging at the renowned Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, California. He recently completed his Ph.D. at York University in Toronto, Canada.


For twenty-five years Vince has taught Instrumental Music at the elementary and secondary school levels. He is in frequent demand as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician throughout the United States and Canada. His Cool Ideas, Arranging Concepts, Digital Workflows, and Creativity Workouts seminars focus on ways to engage students and teachers in the creative process.


Vince continues to receive many commissions and his works have been recorded and performed throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. His pieces are frequently performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago, Illinois.

Vince currently lives Toronto.
