About The Festival

With the winter term just around the corner, the time has come to plan and prepare new repertoire with your ensembles. Studying chamber music is a fantastic way to raise the bar for your instrumental program and to enrich the musical learning experience for your young musicians. In partnership with the Ontario Band Association, and with continued support from our sponsors at Cosmo Music and Yamaha, the University of Toronto Scarborough is thrilled to host the 3rd Annual 2012 UTSC/OBA Chamber Music Festival.

The 3-day UTSC/OBA Chamber Music Festival offers you and your ensembles a truly engaging and educational experience. Thoughtful guidance and suggestions for improvement will be offered by our two-member adjudication team during one-on-one clinics following each performance, along with encouragement for continued study and musical growth. All are welcome to learn from and support one another during the festival - we urge festival participants to stay and witness the experience of other groups during their performances and adjudications. All sessions are open the public - friends and family are welcome.

Considering chamber music as an option for your students? Through the study of chamber music, your students will take on the responsibility of musical leadership in a different capacity from the work they accomplish as part of a large ensemble. Chamber music groups are small, normally with one person per part, and allow the opportunity for self-directed leadership. Students must work together as a team and learn to negotiate shared decision-making as they study a piece of music. Drawing upon the skills and tools they have acquired from their large ensemble rehearsals and study, students will purposefully apply their learning and refine listening and communication skills within a smaller group. Supportive and nurturing design, and in keeping with these learning outcomes, the UTSC/OBA Chamber Music Festival is an excellent goal towards which your students can strive.

Last year's UTSC/OBA Chamber Music Festival was a huge success, prompting this year's organizers to add a third day. The 2012 UTSC/OBA Chamber Music Festival will be held from Tuesday, April 17th through to Thursday, April 19th, 2012 at the UTSC campus (1265 Military Trail). The 2012 Festival Information Package is available online at the festival website - festival registration packages will be accepted until Friday, March 2nd, 2012. For any and all questions related to the festival, please feel free to contact Festival Coordinator, Lynn Tucker, at tucker@utsc.utoronto.ca. She is happy to assist in any way possible. See you at the festival!
